Joanna Scislowicz was born on 11 November 1981 in Brzeg, Poland. She received a First Class MA from the Academy of Fine Arts, Poznan, Poland. Scislowicz went on to achieve a further MA from Wimbledon College of Art. She is interested in exploring issues of faith, religion and spirituality in the contemporary world. She uses traditional techniques (brush and oil on canvas) and manages with tremendous skill to hide even the faintest hint of a brush mark. Reaching this particular effect has taken years of practice, and visually resembles the medium of spray can. Joanna currently lives and works in London.

Jim Starrʼs use of pop culture and pin up imagery is guaranteed to inspire anyone who loves the louche and the lowbrow. His work fuels the spirit and strikes a chord in the soul which continues to resonate long after the first glance.

After an initial brush with spray stenciling in the mid nineties Jim moved over to screen printing having been influenced by Robert Rauschenberg and many other painter/printmakers of the New York scene from the 50ʼs and 60ʼs, whilst keeping an eye on newer painters such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring from the 80ʼs.

Using a mixture of original screen printed material, his own photography, freehand drawings and found collage he creates unique and sometimes complex hand pulled prints, with no two turning out the same. For Jim there is no such thing as an average print. They can vary from five layers to forty and can take weeks or even months to complete. Having printed onto denim, silk, surfboards and many other surfaces Jimʼs bigger images are printed on canvas and reworked and refined using acrylics and spray paint.

His current work utilises his borderline obsession with timeless and universal icons. These easy on the eye images skillfully offer an entry point into a complex world which has much more to it than first meets the eye.
Jimʼs love of travel and insatiable appetite for all that is lo-fi flows through his images. East meets west, white trash snuggled up with the glitterati, good versus evil and all the in-betweens.

Jim has exhibited in solo and group shows on many occasions in London and Bristol and has painted and drawn on location worldwide. His work has appeared on Tʼshirts, clothing designs, club flyers, records and canvases.

Works by Jim Starr are available in the gallery, price on application.

A large scale oil on canvas female nude devoid of objectification. A frank and humble oil on board self-portrait. A series of oils on canvas and monoprints of “bird women” confronting the term used by men. Sophie’s work encapsulates what it is to be a 21st century woman.
